"How does one express one's grief over losing a friend of almost 50 years, encompassing professional, personal, and family ties?" Gordon said in a statement on Tuesday, Aug. 1.

"I first met James when as a young lawyer, I represented the Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI), which he headed. We traveled together on behalf of PARI – to Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, and Taiwan, among others," he continued.

According to Gordon, the professional relationship evolved into a close companionship, and they became "ninongs" to each other's children.

The PRC chief pointed out that as Dy's lawyer, he witnessed his work ethic. This level qualified him to take advantage of opportunities that made him one of the Philippines' most successful businessmen.

"I am sure I am not the only one who grieves today. James touched a lot of lives – not just of those he helped, but also of those he worked with."

Gordon further said that Dy has a humanitarian heart, "a pillar of industry like no other." He stressed that "our country has lost an exemplary human being, one truly worthy of emulation."

"James's memory will linger and never be forgotten. Our country needs more people like him. I pray that many of our Kababayans will follow in his footsteps. Farewell for now, Kumpadre," he added. (Rhowen Del Rosario)
