2 MPD cops wounded in shootout with robbers in Quiapo


Two members of the Manila Police District (MPD) were wounded in a shootout with three robbery-holdup suspects along Paterno Street in Quiapo, Manila on Thursday, July 6.

The MPD Sta. Cruz Police Station (PS-3) identified the suspects as Anthony Prado, 21; Evamarie Derain, 46; and Joseph Macatangay, 19, all residents of Sampaloc, Manila.

According to the police report, a 34-year-old man was waiting for a tricycle along Rizal Avenue near corner Paterno Street when the suspects on board a motorcycle approached him.

Macatangay forcibly took the victim's belt bag containing a cellphone and other personal belongings.

The victim immediately sought assistance from the patrolling policemen in the area.

The police immediately responded as soon as they noticed the commotion.

The responding officers ran after the suspects onboard their motorcycle.

The police saw Macatangay throw the stolen belt bag to Derain who was heading to Paterno Street.

While being chased, Macatangay fired his gun at responding officers, hitting Cpl. Christian Rico and Cpl. Allan Apostol in their thighs.

The police fired back and hit Macatangay's feet, leading to his arrest and the two other suspects.

Confiscated from the suspects were the victim’s belt bag, a .38-caliber pistol with two live ammunition, a black pellet gun, a pink Yamaha motorcycle with no plate number, and three more phones.

The wounded police officers were immediately brought to the hospital and are now in good condition.

The suspects face charges for violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act and robbery-holdup. (Richielyn Canlas)
