“Its design serves as a catch basin for mountain water and is resilient to sudden floods,” said DPWH-6 (Western Visayas) Director Nerie Bueno.

The project under the supervision of the DPWH-Iloilo 2nd District Engineering Office will benefit residents living in low-lying communities on the Jalaur River, particularly during the monsoon or “habagat” season.

Bueno said that the project will also mitigate soil erosion and other damage caused by the river’s rapid overflow, especially in Barangay Delgado.

The project will supplement the flood-control component of the multi-billion mega dam project under construction in Jalaur.

The National Irrigation Administration (NIA)-6 said that the Jalaur River Multipurpose Project-Stage II (JRMP-II) averted major flash flood during tropical storm “Paeng” last October.

Citing studies of South Korean experts, the dam serves as temporary water storage in the mountainside of Calinog.
