Police here issued this reminder after vehicular accidents increased by more than 50 percent in the first five months of this year compared to the same period last year.

Police Col. Ireneo Dalogdog, chief of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said a total of 1,118 road accidents were recorded from January to May this year.

There were only 735 traffic accidents from January to May last year, Dalogdog said.

Unfortunately, Dalogdog said, some of the road accidents resulted in deaths.

“For this year, there were 10 cases of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, 329 reckless imprudence resulting in physical injury, and 849 reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property,” Dalogdog said.

Dalogdog said 90 percent of the road accidents involved motorcycles.

The CCPO chief said the increasing number of road accidents can be attributed to the return to normalcy where the people’s movement is no longer restricted.

“Before, because of the pandemic, there was limited movement but now we are back to normal, especially the night life,” Dalogdog said.

Most accidents that were recorded occurred late at night or at dawn involving intoxicated drivers.

“One of the main reasons for the accidents is drunkenness. Avoid drinking when you drive or don’t drive when you drink,” said Dalogdog.
