Muntinlupa City Mayor Rozzano Rufino “Ruffy” Biazon made the announcement on Twitter. The former senator died at 8:30 a.m. He was 88.
Biazon, a Philippine Marine Corps general, was diagnosed with lung cancer last July of 2022 and underwent treatment. However, he caught pneumonia twice this year, the second being more serious than the first.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that the bell has rung and the last Taps has been sung for General Rodolfo Gaspar Biazon, former AFP Chief of Staff, member of the Philippine Senate and House of Representatives,” Mayor Biazon said in a statement on Twitter.
“It is perfectly fitting that today, Independence Day, at around 8:30 a.m., the soldier who dedicated his life and laid it on the line in defending freedom and democracy, has been set free from the pains of this world,” the mayor added.
“He courageously fought his last battle like a Marine would, but it is the Lord’s will which prevails,” he further said.
“We send off a warrior and gentleman, secure in the knowledge that the faithful servant has fought the good fight and has finished the race,” the younger Biazon also said.
“Pong” as he is fondly called by colleagues, is survived by his wife Monserrat “Monchie” Bunoan-Biazon, their daughter Rita Rosanna, Rino Rudiyardo and Ruffy Biazon, son-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
