The month of May is traditionally observed by Roman Catholics, particularly Marian devotees, as the month dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
In the country, festivities observed at this time of the year like Marian processions such as the Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May) as well as town fiestas are held in honor of the Holy Mother.
This year marks the resumption of many of these age-old traditions in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the ease in Covid-19 restrictions.
In 2022, Pope Francis urged Catholics to pray the Holy Rosary to seek for the Blessed Mother’s intercession against Covid-19.
The Pontiff, likewise, called on the faithful to pray the rosary for the whole month of May either as a family or individually.
On the same year, Church leaders consecrated the Philippines to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on May 13, the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima.
In his encyclical, Blessed Pope Paul VI said, the month of May calls on the faithful in every part of the world to pay a “moving tribute of faith and love to the Queen of Heaven.
During this month, Christians offer up to Mary from their hearts a special fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month too, the benefits of God’s mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance.”
