The end of passwords? Google introduces Passkeys for enhanced security

A simpler, safer alternative to passwords

At a glance

  • Google has introduced passkeys for Google Accounts on all major platforms, providing a simpler and more secure alternative to traditional passwords.

  • Passkeys allow users to sign in to apps and websites using biometric data like fingerprints, face scans, or screen lock PINs, eliminating the need to remember complex passwords.

  • The passkey technology was developed in collaboration with the FIDO Alliance, Apple, and Microsoft and has already been implemented by companies like DocuSign, Kayak, PayPal, Shopify, and Yahoo! Japan.

  • Google Workspace administrators will soon have the option to enable passkeys for their end-users during the sign-in process.

  • Passkeys are compatible with devices running at least Windows 10 or macOS Ventura, iOS 16, or Android 9 and require a supported browser and certain features such as screen lock and Bluetooth to be enabled on the device.

Google has announced the rollout of passkeys for Google Accounts on all major platforms, offering users a simpler and more secure alternative to traditional passwords. Developed in collaboration with the FIDO Alliance, Apple, and Microsoft, passkeys aim to make signing in easier while significantly reducing the risk of compromised security.

Passkeys are resistant to online attacks such as phishing and allow users to sign in to apps and websites using biometric data like fingerprints, face scans, or screen lock PINs. In doing so, they eliminate the need to remember complex passwords or use easily guessed information like pet names and birthdays.

Google has previously introduced passkey support for Chrome and Android, with companies such as DocuSign, Kayak, PayPal, Shopify, and Yahoo! Japan adopting the technology to streamline user sign-ins. Now, Google Account users can also opt for a passwordless sign-in experience with passkeys.

Setting up passkeys is a straightforward process at g.co/passkeys. Google Workspace administrators will soon be able to enable passkeys for their end-users during sign-in. However, traditional passwords and 2-Step Verification (2SV) will continue functioning for Google Accounts as the transition to passkeys takes time.

Passkeys are compatible with devices running at least Windows 10 or macOS Ventura, iOS 16, or Android 9 and require a supported browser like Chrome 109 or higher, Safari 16 or higher, or Edge 109 or higher. They also necessitate a screen lock and Bluetooth to be enabled on the device. Users are advised to update their devices to the latest operating system releases for optimal performance.

Google Passkey is also more convenient than passwords. You don't have to remember a long, complex password, and you don't have to worry about typing it in incorrectly. Use your device's biometric authentication to sign in with a single tap.

Google Passkey is still under development, but it's already being supported by some of the biggest websites and apps in the world, including Google, Microsoft, and Apple. As more and more websites and apps adopt Google Passkey, it will become the new standard for passwordless login.

Here are some of the benefits of using Google Passkey:

  • Google Passkey is more secure than passwords because it's stored on your device and not shared with the website or app you're signing in to. This means that your passwords are safe even if your device is hacked.
  • You don't have to remember a long, complex password, and you don't have to worry about typing it in incorrectly. Use your device's biometric authentication to sign in with a single tap.
  • Google Passkey works across all your devices, so you don't have to worry about creating and managing separate passwords for each device.
  • Google Passkey is easy to use, even for people who are not tech-savvy.

As the world looks back at the recent World Password Day, Google is optimistic that because of this latest security innovation, users may no longer need to remember or use passwords by next year, offering the convenience and security that everyone deserves.
