Bulacan preserves religious tradition

The Bulacan provincial government takes pride in preserving the province's rich culture and heritage such as the Flores de Mayo held at a mall in Malolos, Bulacan on Friday, May 26.

During the event dubbed "Bulaklakan 2023, Harana at Bulaklak para sa Mahal na Birheng Maria", Provincial History, Arts, Culture and Tourism Office (PHACTO) department head Dr. Eliseo S. dela Cruz and Bulacan Provincial Administrator Antonette Constantino offered garlands, which was followed the hanging of a rosary by Maria Victoria R. Tengco Burgos, vice chairman of the Bulacan Tourism Council, to the Blessed Virgin Mary statue.

Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando also showed his devotion during the event by placing the crown flowers on the head of the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The governor reminded the Bulakenyos, particularly the youths, to take pride in preserving the province's rich culture and heritage because it is indeed lucky for being gifted with rich natural resources.

During the whole month of May, the provincial capitol and local government units of the four cities and 20 municipalities in the province of Bulacan support the Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo events to encourage the youth to keep old traditions alive and instill in them the importance of religious events as part of their heritage.

Last May 15 in Pulilan town, the Carabao Festival, a celebration and thanksgiving of farmers to San Isidro Labrador for a bountiful yield, was held. It was followed by one of the most interesting religious festivals in Bulacan, the "Fertility Festival", a three-day event in Obando held from May 17 to 19, attended by local and foreign visitors to pay homage to the Virgin of Salambao.

A few days ago, huge crowds including local and foreign visitors, flocked to the streets and enjoyed watching the  "Santacruzan,"  a procession featuring beautiful ladies or the  "sagalas" (dressed up like royalty) with their handsome escorts.

The religious procession showcases various characters from the Bible and depicts the search for the Holy Grail by Queen Helena and her son, Prince Constantine.
