Sikaran fighters from various parts of the country are set to converge in Tanay as the Rizal town hosts this year’s regional tournament of the Filipino traditional martial arts on Saturday, July 15.
More than 150 participants coming from Metro Manila and various provinces in the country are competing in the Global Sikaran Federation (GSF) Raven Sikaran Regional Championship 2023 which will be held at the Ynares Covered Court in Barangay San Isidro, Tanay, this Saturday, July 15.
Master Crisanto Cuevas, GSF Raven Martial Arts School director and chief instructor told Manila Bulletin that at least fourteen groups of Sikaran practitioners coming from different places in Metro Manila and the provinces are joining in this year’s regional tournament that will start at 8 a.m.
As of Wednesday, July 12, the participants that signed up for the regional tournament are Tanay Sikaran Martial Arts School; Bulldog Sikaran- Baras, Rizal; Tornado Sikaran- Baras; Sikaran Police Academy- Antipolo City; Molero Sikaran Arnis; Elefant Sikaran Arnis- Las Pinas; Red Eagle Sikaran- Taguig City; Wildcat Sikaran- Pasig,City; Sikaran Mandaluyong; Trojan Horse Sikaran Cebu,City; Sikaran Wawa Elementary School; GSF Sikaran-Masbate; GSF Samar Chapter Samar City; and GSF Sikaran-Caloocan City.
Sikaran is a traditional Filipino martial arts that was believed to have been initiated by rice farmers in Baras, Tanay and Morong prior to the Spanish occupation.
This Filipino martial arts is a contact sport that involves the feet and the hands to parry the attack of the opponent. The name is believed to have derived from the root word “Sikad” or kick.
The sport is also being practiced in various Asian countries, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the United States after being introduced by both Filipino and foreign martial artists.
Cuevas, who also leads the Tanay Sikaran Martial Arts School in Tanay, has been regularly spearheading the regional tournament in this part of the province.
The regional competition is jointly being presented by GSF Raven Sikaran Martial Arts and Tanay Sikaran Martial Arts School, in cooperation with Congressman Dino Tanjuatco, Mayor Rafael “Lito” Tanjuatco and the Tanay Municipal Government, and Barangay San Isidro Chairman Albert Catolos.
