ABS-CBN News nabs honors from UP Los Banos Gandingan Awards

Report on West PH Sea and TeleRadyo host among the awardees

ABS-CBN broadcast journalist Jervis Manahan and TeleRadyo host Edric Calma were among those awarded at the 17th Gandingan Awards of the University of the Philippines Los Baños.  

Jervis' exclusive report on the plight of Filipino fishermen in the West Philippine Sea won as the Most Development-Oriented News Story. The winning report was part of ABS-CBN News’ coverage of the three-week expedition of UP Marine Science Institute scientists at Pag-asa Island.

“Hindi madalas napakikinggan ‘yung kanilang boses [mga mangingisda sa West Philippine Sea], kaya dapat mas binibigyan ng espasyo sa telebisyon at ibang media platforms,” Jervis said during his acceptance speech. 

Meanwhile, Edric was named Best TV Program Host.  “Ang media po ay hindi lamang talaga pang entertain, hindi lamang po talaga pagbibigay ng information ang ginagawa, kundi napakahalaga po ng education na maaaring ibigay ng media, edukasyon na magagamit para paunlarin ang kanilang kabuhayan, ang ating estado sa ating lipunan, at pang-apat ‘yung ating public service,” he said. 

The Gandingan Awards recognizes outstanding reports, programs, and personalities based on a certain theme.
