With the SIM registration deadline looming on 26 April 2023, major Public Telecommunication Entities (PTEs) — DITO Telecommunity Corp., Globe Telecom Inc., and Smart Communications Inc. — are preparing for a surge in registrants as the countdown begins. With only 22 days left, millions of subscribers are yet to register their SIMs.
Recent statistics, consolidated by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) from major PTEs, show that the number of registered SIMs as of 3 April 2023 are as follows: DITO - 4,452,203; Globe - 24,398,734; and SMART - 29,417,929. This brings a total number of 58,268,866 registered SIMs, which is 34.48% of the 168,977,773 million subscribers nationwide.
Globe’s Channel Management Group Head, Cleo Santos urges their customers to register before the deadline to avoid SIM deactivation. “We have been going far and wide to reach our customers in remote areas and those who need assistance in registering their SIMs. Our online portal and app are accessible 24/7, and our Globe Stores are also open to provide assistance,” Santos added.
Darius Delgado, Head of Globe’s Consumer Mobile Business, also echoes Santos’ statement that they are grateful for the cooperation of their customers and encourages more subscribers to take the initiative to register, ensuring seamless access to the wide range of services Globe has to offer.
Meanwhile, DICT Undersecretary and Spokesperson Anna Mae Lamentillo also cautions the public to remain vigilant against scammers offering assistance with SIM registration. "Be wary of entities who may have malicious intentions to steal personal information and commit fraud. Always register through official links of PTEs to avoid fraudulent activities,” stressed Lamentillo
Failure to register SIMs before the deadline will result in deactivation, rendering them unusable for voice calls, text messaging, and mobile data services. This action is part of the government's effort to improve national security and curb fraudulent activities such as scams and identity theft.
