Maundy Thursday rites to be observed on April 6

Roman Catholics will observe age-old Maundy Thursday Church rites and traditions on April 6.

At the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, Manila, Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula will lead the Chrism Mass at 7 a.m.

The Chrism Mass is a manifestation of the unity of the priests with their bishop.

Bishops also traditionally bless on Maundy Thursday the three oils which will be used in the administration of the sacraments of the diocese for the year – the oil of catechumens to be used for the administration of the sacrament of baptism, the oil of infirm for the sacrament of the anointing of the sick, and the holy chrism for the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and holy orders. The renewal of priestly vows has also been incorporated into the Chrism Mass, which is usually preceded by a morning prayer.

His Eminence will also preside over the Evening Mass Commemorating the Last Supper at the Manila Cathedral at 5 p.m. The faithful are encouraged to go to confession which will be available from 7 p.m. until 12 midnight.

The washing of the feet is part of the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Maundy Thursday.

The faithful also traditionally observe the Visita Iglesia on Maundy Thursday.

“Maundy” comes from the Latin word “mandatum,” which means command and has reference to the commandment that Jesus taught His apostles during the Last Supper. He said, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another just as I have loved you. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Meanwhile, the Stations of the Cross will be held at the Manila Cathedral on Good Friday at 9 a.m. Cardinal Advincula will lead the Veneration of the Cross at 3 p.m.

On Black Saturday, April 8, the cardinal will preside over the Easter Vigil Mass at 8 p.m. On Easter Sunday, April 9, holy masses will be offered at the cathedral at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., and at 6 p.m.
