Cagayan PVET conducting bird flu surveillance in nine towns

CAGAYAN – A bird flu surveillance is being conducted by the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVET) in several towns in this province.

The Office of the Provincial Veterinarian is taking blood samples from ducks and chickens in nine towns to determine if there is bird flu, specifically the avian influenza H5N1 strain in Cagayan.

H5N1 is a type of avian influenza disease that originates from domestic chickens and ducks.

The surveillance is through the collection of blood samples and oropharyngeal swabbing in ducks and chickens.

The migratory birds often flocked to nine towns in Cagayan which are possible carriers of the bird flu disease.

These towns are Aparri, Ballesteros, Buguey, Camalaniugan, Claveria, Peñablanca, Sanchez Mira, Santa Ana, and Santa Teresita.

PVET said all the collected blood and swabbing samples have been submitted to the Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RADDL) in Tuguegarao City and the result will be released after a week.
