Professor Clarita Carlos offered this take in reaction to the headline-grabbing death of Adamson University engineering student John Matthew Salilig, purportedly due to fraternity hazing.

Salilig's passing is unfortunately not unprecedented, as there have been many other high-profile, hazing-related deaths in the past.

"The hazing death of a chem eng'g student should be a signal to completely expunge our abominable concept of MACHISMO...," Carlos, the chief policy adviser to the Speaker on security and defense concerns, wrote on Facebook Saturday, March 4, the emphasis her own.

Machismo is defined as "strong or aggressive masculine pride".

But for Carlos, what happened to Sallilig reflects "nothing but abject cruelty of man vs man".
