Makati City welcomes newest centenarian

Makati City Mayor Abby Binay, together with her husband, Makati City 2nd District Rep. Luis Campos, gave due recognition to the city's newest centenarian as part of the city's pledge to recognize its elderly citizens and their contributions to society.

Binay and Campos personally met Geddie Madriaga, the son of Florencia Madriaga from Barangay West Rembo, and handed over to him the P100,000 cash gift and certificate of appreciation for Lola Florencia from the city government.

Lola Florencia was born on April 29, 1922, and is the newest addition to the city's 107 centenarians with 82 of them recognized during Mayor Abby's administration.

On January 3, Campos, who is also the House Appropriations Committee Vice Chairman, said that the national government has allocated P245 million funds for this year for benefits and gifts to centenarians.

He said that since 2017, Congress has allocated almost P1 billion funds for more than 10,000 Filipino centenarians.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) implements the program in accordance with Republic Act No. 10868 or the Centenarians Law of 2016, where Filipinos who reach the age of 100, whether in the Philippines or abroad, will receive a P100,000 tax-free gift and a congratulatory letter from the President of the Philippines.
