Cebu City police on alert for Charter Day, EDSA anniversary

CEBU CITY – Police will be on full alert for two major activities here on Feb. 24 and 25.

The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) is gearing up for the 86th Charter Day celebration on Feb. 24 and the 37th anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution the next day.

Lt. Col. Janette Rafter, CCPO Deputy City Director for Operations, said security plans have been laid out for the week-long activities as part of Charter Day celebration.

The celebration started last Feb. 17 through tree-planting activity at the South Road Properties and an exhibit on the life and works of the late Sen. Don Vicente Rama, the father of the city’s charter.

"It's a week-long activity and we already have prepared separate security plans for each activity because there are outdoor and indoor activities. They require different kinds of security levels,” said Rafter.

Rafter said the CCPO is also preparing for possible protest rallies that cause-oriented groups may hold on Feb. 25.

“We have yet to receive any information if there will be protest rallies during the commemoration of EDSA but we will give them time to hold their activities and express their sentiments,” Rafter said.

Rafter appealed to those who will hold mass actions to avoid hampering traffic. “We have preemptive measures in place in case there will be eventualities and we hope that everyone will cooperate but we assure that our police will be there ready to immediately react,” said Rafter.
