The Nestlé factory in Tanauan, Batangas uses RE from AboitizPower and proudly produces Bear Brand and ready-to-drink products.

For Nestlé PH, uninterrupted operations are crucial in enabling it to serve the nutrition, health, and wellness needs of Filipino families. For the food and beverage company, this must be balanced with minimizing environmental impact and maximizing the efficient use of resources.

With manufacturing as a key activity, electricity from renewable energy (RE) that is responsive to its factories’ specific power needs equally addresses these two priorities.

“Our factories operate 24/7. Clean, cost-effective, and reliable electricity is essential to ensure smooth production as planned to provide a constant supply of our products to consumers,” said Nestlé Technical Director Edgardo Aguilera.

Nestlé PH’s transition to AboitizPower’s energy retailer, AdventEnergy

The advent of Retail Competition and Open Access in 2013 enabled Nestlé to choose a Retail Electricity Supplier (RES) from which it could source its renewable energy (RE) requirements, with one offering the most advantageous services and features. Notably, RE solutions are important to Nestlé, given its roadmap to net zero greenhouse gas emissions to transform its operations, source responsibly, and contribute to a waste-free future.

"Nestlé PH first partnered with AboitizPower in 2016, enabling our Wyeth factory in Canlubang, Laguna to switch over to RE. Our initial partnership ran for more than five years,” said Aguilera. In 2022, the partnership was renewed under AboitizPower’s RES arm, AdventEnergy Inc.  “We continue to be partners with AboitizPower today, with our electric power expectations and goals fulfilled.”
In providing its quality products, Nestle PH requires a secure power supply on top of efficient operations and quality service from retail suppliers. Considering the nature of its energy needs, the company tapped AboitizPower, finding the balance between environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.

Before switching to RE, Nestlé factories in the country were served by the distribution utilities where they are located. Nestlé PH’s decision to turn to AboitizPower for its Luzon factories was driven by the need to transition to using RE.

As an added value, AdventEnergy provides free seminars and training and capacity-building sessions to equip Nestlé PH workforce teams with the necessary know-how to achieve energy efficiencies. The AboitizPower RES arm also maintains communication channels to address any concerns or requests of Nestlé PH promptly.  AdventEnergy also provides free technical support and electrical system testing, helping the factory to determine whether there are issues in its electrical system.

Energy solutions for Nestle PH

Electricity from renewable energy sources produced by AboitizPower helps Nestlé PH reduce its carbon footprint while increasing production efficiencies.

AdventEnergy’s tailored approach entails a thorough understanding of Nestlé’s energy consumption patterns and operational needs. Moreover, AdventEnergy’s Always-on Innovation approach and focus on sustainability are major factors allowing appreciable progress by Nestlé PH in reducing its environmental footprint while achieving efficiencies.

A significant aspect of the partnership is understanding Nestlé’s load profile and how AdventEnergy provides tailored solutions accordingly. Food and beverage manufacturing often involves fluctuating energy demands, with peaks during production hours and valleys during downtime. A portfolio contract allows the RES to maximize efficiencies across all factories of Nestlé PH.

Nestlé’s production lines require dependable power at all times. A consistent supply ensures that processes run efficiently to prevent downtime and maintain product integrity. Stable electricity is essential for operations ranging from production, to packaging, to storage, including refrigeration. Proactively, AdventEnergy keeps a close watch on Nestle’s unique requirements, conducting thorough assessments of energy consumption patterns.

By knowing and understanding these patterns, solutions are created that effectively manage and stabilize Nestle’s energy use, mitigating any adverse effects from its load profile. By obtaining clear and comprehensive data on energy use, AdventEnergy helps Nestlé PH to make informed decisions that maximize good power management. The approach improves overall operational efficiencies with the appropriate power supply, crucial in maintaining the production standards that Nestlé PH is known for.

Nestlé products manufactured in the country are now made with 100 percent renewable electricity.

For Nestlé PH, there is no turning back from using RE. Because of its transition to RE through its partnership with AboitizPower’s AdventEnergy, the company has lowered its emissions of greenhouse gases.

The energy partnership is a key factor in transforming Nestlé PH operations. In maintaining the relationship, both aim for more joint efforts to promote RE in the future.

These are all clear proof that the successful partnership between Nestlé PH and AboitizPower promotes optimal operations, with practices being deployed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and further the good of the business.
