2 communist rebels killed in Cagayan clash

GATTARAN, Cagayan – Two New People’s Army rebels were killed in an encounter with the military in Barangay San Carlos here on Saturday morning, December 23.

Soldiers from the 5th Infantry Battalion received a tip from the community that armed and suspicious-looking men were in the area.

Government forces proceeded to Barangay San Carlos and encountered 12 members of the East Front Committee of the Cagayan Valley Regional Committee under alias “Karl,” resulting in a 50-minute gun battle in which a male fighter and an NPA amazon were killed.

Troops sustained no casualties and recovered a 5.56mm R4 rifle and equipment in the area.
