"May our collective memory of Super Typhoon Yolanda inspire us to be agents of healing, reconciliation and hope in our diocese and beyond," said Borongan Bishop Crispin Varquez.

Remembering lives lost, families shattered

Reflecting on that fateful day, the bishop urged the faithful to remember and pray for the victims of the super typhoon, emphasizing the preciousness of life and the importance of caring for one another.

"Let us pray for their eternal rest and for the comfort and strength of their families. May their memory remind us of the preciousness of life and the urgency of caring for our brothers and sisters," Varquez said.

He also acknowledged the pain and grief that survivors continue to bear, pointing out the need for continued support and compassion.

However, amid the devastation, the bishop highlighted the bonds of "solidarity and faith" of the people, recalling the countless acts of heroism and selflessness that happened in the aftermath of the disaster.

He commended the aid organizations, volunteers, and individuals who worked tirelessly to provide relief and assistance, noting that their compassion and solidarity inspired hope.

"We express our deepest gratitude to all who extended a helping hand during our darkest hour," he said.

While significant progress has been made since "Yolanda," Varquez said that the journey toward full recovery is "not yet complete."

The bishop acknowledged that many are still struggling to rebuild their homes, livelihoods, and lives.

He then called on the diocese to redouble its efforts in supporting those still on this journey, offering time, resources, and skills to help them stand on their feet again.

While "Yolanda" served as a reminder of the urgent need to care for the common home, the bishop emphasized the threat posed by climate change, particularly to the planet's most vulnerable inhabitants.

"Let us commit ourselves to sustainable practices and advocate for policies that protect the environment and promote justice for all," the bishop added.

A call to action: Jericho Walk against mining

Moreover, the bishop announced an upcoming Island Wide Jericho Walk to be held in Guiuan from Nov. 29 to 30.

The two-day event will serve as a "prayer and protest against irresponsible mining" in the islands.

The bishop called upon everyone to join in this call to action, becoming stewards of creation and working towards a more just and sustainable future.
