There is a need to balance the interests of the sellers and consumers when it comes to the suggestion of a certain House member to sell eggs by the kilo.

Thus, said House Speaker Martin Romualdez, who commented on the proposal Monday, Nov. 27 right after conducting a price inspection at Farmers Plaza in Quezon City.

"Sa totoo lang po, depende talaga yan kung sino kausap mo (The truth is, it depends on who you are talking to)," Romualdez said when asked in a chance interview whether or not he was in favor of AGAP Party-list Rep. Nicanor Briones' eggs-by-the-kilo pitch.

"Syempre kung nagbebenta ka, syempre mas maganda kung pwede yung gagawing isang presyo (Of course if you're the one selling, of course it's better if you can sell for just one price)," the House chief said.

"Pero kung kapiraso, e yung consumer, yung mga bumibili, e gusto nila [tingi] kasi hindi naman lahat kumakain ng isang kilo ng itlog. Kaya ibabalanse na lang natin (But as for retail, the consumer or buyer would like to purchase by the piece since not everybody can eat a kilo of eggs. So we'll just balance it)," added the Speaker.

At any rate, Romualdez said it was "the right of the seller" if he or she would prefer to sell eggs by the kilo.

In a radio interview Sunday, Nov. 26, Briones suggested that it would be "better" for eggs to be sold via kilo, like meat.

In local supermarkets, eggs are normally sold by the dozen, with the price dictated by their size: small, medium, large, extra-large and jumbo.

Romualdez led the market inspection less than a month before Christmas. He was accompanied by House Deputy Majority Leader ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo.
