Sun, sun, sun, here you come, but so do wrinkles

Not all sunscreens are created equal

At a glance

  • There are two types of UV rays that penetrate our skin, namely UVA and UVB. UVA rays comprise 95 percent of the rays that reach the earth’s surface and they’re the ones responsible for signs of skin aging.

GIVING LIFE Guests were asked to build their own terrarium. Before: The kit provided by Moss Escape. After: Mini-terrarium featuring aloe vera and other succulents

“Sit down if you don’t apply sunscreen every day,” commanded board-certified dermatologist Dr. Vanika Viardo while playing a quick game during Nature Republic’s Sun Safe Club event on Nov. 16. Impressively, only a couple of guests sat down in compliance with this prompt, as well as with the succeeding one that stated, “Sit down if you use sunscreen with an SPF lower than 50.” It seemed as if almost everyone knew the importance of incorporating good quality sunscreen into their daily skincare routine.

The afternoon sun glazed the interiors of The Corner House in San Juan, guests coming in dressed in their best picnic-esque outfits. As we sipped on coffee and matcha and snacked on sandwiches, the place livened with music and chatter to commemorate the launch of the Nature Republic California Aloe Line.

“Sit down if you reapply your sunscreen throughout the day,” Dr. Viardo continued. The place filled with sheepish giggles as guests hesitantly sat back down, and in only a matter of seconds probably nobody was left standing up.

Aptly for the weather that day, the event centered on a range of sun protection products. The president of Globalbrands Retail Inc. Darrell Sia, took the stage to introduce us to the California Aloe Line, which featured the Daily Sun Block, Moisturizing Tone Up Sun Block, Fresh Powdery Sun Stick, and Aqua Jumbo Sunscreen.

But first, why even use sunscreen? Well, sunscreen provides a protective barrier on our skin against harmful UV rays. Dr. Viardo explained that there are two types of UV rays that penetrate our skin, namely UVA and UVB. UVA rays comprise 95 percent of the rays that reach the earth’s surface and they’re the ones responsible for signs of skin aging.

Due to their longer wavelength, they can penetrate deeper parts of the skin as well as windows and even blinds, making it essential for us to apply sunscreen even when we are just indoors.

The remaining five percent consists of UVB rays, which are shorter in wavelength yet possess higher energy levels compared to those of UVA. These rays typically damage the outer layer of skin causing sunburn. Both rays can be catalysts for skin cancer.

Nature Republic’s multi-awarded California Aloe formula prides itself on an impressive SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 50+ and PA (Protection Grade of UVA) ++++ rating, which is strong enough to combat harmful rays and prevent harsh sun-related damage. It’s both non-greasy and moisturizing properties are made possible through the use of aloe vera, creating the optimal formulation for Philippine climate. Each of the four different products has a different purpose in ensuring that our skin is protected throughout the day. Whether it’s to provide a base layer underneath your makeup, a touch-up layer over your makeup, or overall protection for every activity you set out to do, this line makes sure to, quite literally, get you covered.

The highlight of the event shone the spotlight on the key ingredient, the main component of most of Nature Republic’s bestselling products—aloe vera. In collaboration with Moss Escape, guests were also invited to craft their own mini terrariums for a chance to nurture their very own aloe vera plants and other succulents. Through this interactive and educational experience, we, in turn, were able to understand the value of using products made from organic and non-harmful ingredients, especially when it comes to what we put on our bodies on a daily basis.
