Davao del Norte 1st district congressman and former speaker Pantaleon Alvarez says that Mindanao should advocate for independence if the Philippines continues to claim its stake in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

In a bold suggestion, Alvarez says that if the supposed “Imperial Manila” insists on “dragging the entire nation towards the prospect of war”, then Mindanao is better off by itself.

“If that would be the decision of the Philippine government, to keep on challenging China instead of seeking a balanced and sound approach that prioritizes national interest, I guess it is better to advocate for the independence of peaceful people of Mindanao and free the people of the south from a miserable devastation, as dictated by the north, so that we Mindanawons can be allowed to chart our own destiny,” Alvarez said on Monday, Nov. 20.

“I suggest that they should think thoroughly their decisions. I am of the position that it is better for the government to provide more jobs, ensure food security, and ultimately, develop the economy for the betterment of the Filipino people,” he added.

Alvarez argued that the Philippine government should focus on crucial domestic issues instead of its “continuous bickering” with China.

He said President Marcos should redirect the focus and energy of the government toward building a more resilient nation.

"While it is true that international relations are undeniably important, our primary duty lies in ensuring the prosperity and well-being of our people,” the former House Speaker said.

“Let us stop this madness and delusion that we fight China in an armed conflict as part of the frontline of US (United States) geopolitical interests,” he stressed.

“Wag natin kalimutan, iniwan din ng mga Amerikano ang (Let's not forget, the Americans also left) Ukraine, Iraq, at (and) Afghanistan. I believe that by channeling our efforts towards addressing domestic challenges such as poverty reduction, food security, inflation, among others, we can build a more stable foundation for our nation's future,” he noted.

Over the past months, a series of incidents between the security and maritime forces of the two countries have occurred in the WPS.

Recently, it was reported that a Chinese Coast Guard vessel deployed a water cannon at a Philippine ship conducting a resupply mission to Filipino troops stationed at Ayungin Shoal. --Dexter Barro II
