Google Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Buds Pro has some new tricks

At a glance

  • The Pixel Watch 2 adds new sensors for body temperature and electrodermal activities.

  • Pixel Buds Pro now has conversation detection, which automatically goes to transparency mode when it detects you speaking.

  • We don't know for sure if conversation detection will activate if you start singing.

Google’s second generation Pixel Watch 2 is ready to heat up the smartwatch competition. It sports the same design as from the first Pixel Watch, round and glassy. It’s very attractive to look at in its simplicity.

The new stuff in it includes a body temperature sensor, and a sensor for electrodermal activity–a phrase I have never heard of until reading about the Pixel Watch 2. Based on my limited reading about it, it measures electrical activity in the body, which is, in short, a very fancy way of measuring your sweat glands. There’s also a multi-path heart rate sensor. Sounds like the Pixel Watch 2 will be a good fitness tracker.

Powering the Pixel Watch 2 is a Snapdragon W5 processor, which allows 24 hours of battery life.

What really caught my attention in Google’s list of announcements, is the Pixel Buds Pro. I love earbuds and wished I had at least one, because I really find them cool and interesting, and handy–it was difficult to binge-watch Castlevania Nocturne on Netflix at night without waking up the rest of the family.

So, the Pixel Buds Pro will have conversation detection, which switches off your audio when it detects you speaking, going to transparency mode. But–I have a big but here, what if you just like the song so much, you started singing with it? Singing is definitely different than speaking, but will that trigger conversation detection? Sounds like it can ruin anyone’s jam. But hey, I would love to know for sure.

Among improvements is what Google says is Bluetooth Super Wideband to improve audio. Clear Calling is to remote background noise during a conversation.

As much as Google talked a lot of about AI. There seems to be little for the Buds Pro and Pixel Watch 2. But you can be sure more will be coming in the future.
