Phivolcs records more volcanic quakes in Taal in past 24 hours

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has detected an increase in the number of volcanic earthquakes in Taal in the past 24-hour monitoring of the active volcano in Batangas.

In its bulletin on Tuesday, Oct. 31, Phivolcs reported 79 volcanic tremors lasting two to five minutes, which were more than the previous day's 11 earthquakes.

It also noted that the sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission averaged 7,084 tons per day on Oct. 29 due to a continuous upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the Taal’s main crater lake.

Meanwhile, a 900-meter plume was observed from Taal Volcano, before it drifted southwest.

Phivolcs warned the public against possible hazards that may occur including steam-driven or phreatic or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas.

Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, which means it is still under a “low-level unrest.” (Lizst Torres Abello)
