East zone concessionaire Manila Water Co. has expanded its customer reach to 7.6 million.

In a statement on Thursday, October 19, the water utility company said it achieved a total of one million connections in service expansion over the past 26 years.

As of July 23, Manila Water was able to install 16,728 new water connections, which represents 81 percent of their goal for 2023.

The consumer population encompasses eastern Metro Manila as well as some municipalities in Rizal.

Subsequently, a total of 553 new commercial and industrial connections were established.

The water company has also maintained a monthly compliance rate of 100 percent for water safety.

Since then, Manila Water has continued to ensure water safety and proper water pressure by following the protocols of the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water.

As of July, the uninterrupted water supply and sufficient pressure have serviced over 98.35 percent of the concessionaire's connections.

The average water pressure provided by Manila Water at ground level is 7 pounds per square inch (psi).

Moreover, their expansion and provision of 24/7 service would help reduce water losses in the east zone areas.

Water loss, also known as non-revenue water (NRW) is considered as the amounts wasted because of leaks and illegal piping or connections in the network.

Manila Water reported that it maintained the NRW below to 15 percent. To compare, their second quarter average for 2023 was 13.48 percent, at par with first-world countries.

In reference, 25 percent was the NRW standard set by The World Bank.

Jeric Sevilla, Manila Water corporate communications director said that since working with the Metropolitan Waterworks Sewerage System Regulatory Office (MWSSRO) they have continuously improved their service.

“The company has invested heavily in augmenting the water sources, upgrading its systems, and maintaining the water network,” he added.

Manila Water plans to inaugurate the East Bay Phase 1 Water Treatment Plant in December.

The plant has the capacity to rehabilitate 50 million liters per day of raw water from the Laguna Lake.

About 300,000 residents in six Rizal municipalities will benefit from the treated water.

The company’s effort to expand their water service is part of the massive water service improvement program, aiming to reach far-flung and underserved areas in the Rizal province. (Gabriell Christel Galang)
