Solidarity and hope in World Lymphoma and Blood Cancer Awareness Month

The Blood Cancer Alliance of the Philippines was officially launched to help the Filipino blood cancer warriors

Drawing inspiration from the classic adage "It requires a community to nurture a child," we can similarly assert that battling and triumphing over cancer necessitates a collective effort. While the physical struggle is borne by one individual, the emotional and mental fortitude is profoundly influenced by the uplifting support of loved ones and the hope they provide.

In a continued display of unity, the community gathers to pay tribute to survivors, fighters, and their families during this year's World Lymphoma and Blood Cancer Awareness Month.

Blood cancer originates from genetic mutations in blood cells, with Lymphoma, Leukemia, and Myeloma being the most prevalent forms. According to the World Health Organization's Global Cancer Observatory, the Philippines witnesses approximately 5,000 instances of Lymphoma, 6,000 cases of Leukemia, and 800 cases of Myeloma diagnosed each year. This translates to nearly 12,000 Filipinos annually receiving a blood cancer diagnosis. Beyond the statistics, it signifies the impact on 12,000 families, the disruption of 12,000 lives, and the commencement of 12,000 battles for a brighter future.

Many people are unaware that Lymphoma is a type of cancer that originates in the immune system's infection-fighting cells known as lymphocytes. These cells are present in various parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow, and other areas, and Lymphoma prompts abnormal changes and uncontrolled growth of lymphocytes. Common indications of this condition encompass swollen lymph nodes, chills, weight loss, and fatigue, all of which can often be attributed to or mistaken for other ailments. This underscores the importance of consulting a medical professional for an accurate diagnosis, and it emphasizes the need for continued education about blood cancers. Lymphoma Philippines is committed to advancing this cause.

Lymphoma Philippines is a non-profit organization for Lymphoma patients, survivors, and caregivers with the aim of spreading awareness and education about Lymphoma and connecting the community through medically-approved Lymphoma-related campaigns in the country. The lack of information inspired cancer survivor Jheric Delos Angeles, who recovered from Stage four Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, and his wife Anna Tapel-Delos Angeles to create a community of Filipino patients and their family members. Their goal is to educate more people and provide much-needed support, including advocating for better healthcare.

As part of these efforts, Jheric and Anna have launched The LymphomaQR Project, an initiative designed to make information easily accessible to the general public through a user-friendly and familiar tool. The LymphomaQR chatbot hopes to alleviate the burdens faced by Filipinos throughout their Lymphoma journey by helping them:

  • Learn more about Lymphoma and its symptoms
  • Explore possible treatment options
  • Discover available financial assistance programs

“We looked back at our personal journey in the fight against Lymphoma, and saw the gaps to be filled– one of which is quick access to reliable information. With LymphomaQR, we’re simply taking queues from technological trends readily accepted by people to be able to make the experience easier for them, lessening the burden in whatever way we can,” says Lymphoma Philippines co-founder Jheric Delos Angeles.

Jheric and Anna also recognize that there is a bigger battle to be fought and more people willing to support the cause, all united by blood. In line with this, Lymphoma Philippines officially launches the Blood Cancer Alliance of the Philippines this World Lymphoma Awareness Month. They are joining forces with several organizations, including the EPCALM Adult Leukemia Foundation of the Philippines, Kanser sa Adolescents and Young Adults Community / KAYA Community, The Carewell Community Foundation, Touched by Max Inc, Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations, UST Hospital Hematology Department, Philippine College of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, and Takeda Healthcare Philippines Inc. The alliance's mission is to shine a light on the challenges faced by Filipino blood cancer patients, improve access to information and support, and enhance the overall experience and outcomes for all those living with blood cancer.

“We can never truly comprehend the gravity of the battle faced by our survivors, warriors, and their families. Nevertheless, let us continue offering our support, even with a simple click of the share button. It takes just a second, and a piece of essential information, when shared with many, can make a significant difference. Let’s make it happen with the help of Lymphoma Philippines and the Blood Cancer Alliance of the Philippines,” urges Dr. Clarito Cairo, Program Manager at the Department of Health, Disease Prevention and Control Management Bureau, Cancer Control Division. “We at the Department of Health thank you for this and offer our full support.”
