Cybercriminals are targeting our children

How parents can protect children from online predators and malicious cyber activities on gaming platforms

At a glance

  • Kids, with their inherent curiosity and lack of awareness about cyber threats, can easily become targets for online predators and hackers, especially on gaming platforms.

  • Cybercriminals may disguise themselves, using friendly or familiar digital faces, and deploy tactics such as sharing seemingly innocent content with hidden malware or attempting to gain trust for exploitation.

  • Parents and guardians play a crucial role in safeguarding children by monitoring their online activities, implementing parental controls, and establishing secure gaming environments.

  • It's vital to educate children about the potential dangers lurking online, teaching them safe internet practices, and ensuring they feel comfortable reporting any uncomfortable or suspicious interactions immediately.

  • Despite offering a vibrant, creative space for kids, Roblox can also expose them to risks like encounters with online predators, exposure to inappropriate content, and susceptibility to scams, thus requiring additional parental vigilance and control settings.

Today, the growing concern for online safety for children is real as cybercriminals increasingly exploit their curiosity and lack of experience. Children are often the most vulnerable targets, as they may not be aware of the risks of clicking on malicious links or downloading files from unknown sources. Cybercriminals may use these methods to infect devices with malware, steal personal information, or access bank accounts.

A common strategy cybercriminals utilise involves deploying malicious links, often concealed within seemingly innocuous content, such as images of popular cartoon characters. When an unsuspecting child clicks on such links, a malicious payload may be executed, leading to potential digital security breaches. The attacks could manifest in various ways, such as installing unwanted toolbars or initiating phishing expeditions that trick users into providing personal information by mimicking trustworthy websites.

Children's naive and curious nature makes them susceptible to similar tactics, especially given the increasing shared use of devices between parents and children due to scenarios like homeschooling. Knowing this, cybercriminals attempt to target adults by exploiting children's lack of cybersecurity awareness.

Another way where cybercriminals target children is through games. Roblox is a popular online game platform that attracts millions of players of all ages, especially children. It can be a fun and creative outlet for kids, but it is important to be aware of the potential dangers within the game.

One of the biggest dangers is online predators. Predators are adults who use the internet to prey on children. They may use Roblox to gain children's trust by pretending to be other kids or offering them virtual gifts or in-game benefits. Once they have gained a child's trust, they may try to groom them for sexual abuse or meet them in person.

Another danger is exposure to inappropriate content. Roblox has chat filters, but predators can still find ways to send explicit or suggestive messages to children. Additionally, some Roblox games contain inappropriate content, such as violence, sexual themes, or drug use.

Cybercriminals are also drawn to Roblox because of its large population of young and vulnerable users. They may use Roblox to spread malware, scam players, or steal personal information.

Ensuring the safety of children on online gaming platforms calls for meticulous vigilance and proactive steps from parents and guardians to thwart the potential risks posed by online predators.

In online games like Roblox, there is something that is called an ODer. ODers, or online daters, are people who play online games primarily to meet and date other people. They may be interested in forming romantic relationships, friendships, or simply casual encounters. Predators can pretend to be young children to trick kids into dating them in games. They can then ask them to meet in real life.

Always tell your kids to stay safe if ODers will try to interact with them. Tell them to be careful about sharing personal information, such as their real name, address, and phone number. Remind them to avoid meeting with an ODer in real life, and if they are uncomfortable interacting with an ODer, block them and report them to the game moderators.

To avoid this, adults can set up game rules to make children safer. Roblox has several parental controls that you can use to restrict your child's access to certain features, such as chat and private messaging. You can also set screen time limits and prevent your child from playing particular games.

Also, parents need to Talk to their children about online safety. Educate your child about the dangers of online predators and how to stay safe online. Teach them never to share personal information with strangers and report inappropriate behavior to you or Roblox.

You need to monitor your child's activity. Roblox lets you view your child's friends list, chat history, and recent games. This can help you to identify any potential problems.

Be aware of the games your children are playing. Some Roblox games are more likely to attract predators than others. For example, predators can use role-playing games to groom children for sexual abuse.

Encourage your children to play Roblox with friends and family members. This can help to reduce the risk of them encountering predators.

Talk to your children about the importance of reporting inappropriate behavior to you or Roblox. Ensure they know they will not be in trouble for reporting something.

Through continued education and open dialogue with our children about the potential perils of the online world, we can empower them with the knowledge to navigate the internet securely and shield our devices and personal information from shady cyber activities.
