Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Richard Gordon ordered the immediate delivery of 614 pieces of corrugated galvanized iron (CGI) sheets to the typhoon Egay-affected schools in Cagayan province.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Aug. 30, Gordon called for the prioritization of education for the affected students.
Following Gordon's directive, PRC volunteers and staff immediately dispatched the CGI sheets from the PRC National Headquarters in Manila to the port of Santa Ana, Cagayan to Calayan Island.
Through the initiative, 24 classrooms, which are being used by 700 students, will be repaired.
“PRC is truly stretching its efforts. I personally directed my teams to send help to Calayan Island right away, so that children could resume classes at the soonest possible time,” Gordon said.
The PRC also provided boxes of non-food items containing sleeping kits, hygiene kits, kitchen sets, tarpaulins, and water containers to the families affected by Egay.
