Happy Andrada continues to celebrate local textiles with her latest collection

The noted Filipino fashion designer unveiled her latest take on Filipino fashion at Ascott Makati’s “Art of Living” soirée

Happy Andrada’s creations have graced numerous international runways since she started designing. Her avant garde works have been featured on the catwalks of Toronto, Antwerp, and Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, to name a few. But these days, we see her designs take a new form, and are often dedicated to celebrating the tapestries of the Philippines.

For her latest collection, Happy reimagined the beauty of piña and inabel fabrics for a dreamy contemporary collection. Unveiled during the inaugural “Art of Living” soirée of luxury hotel Ascott Makati, the 10-piece collection was all about “a fusion of timeless Filipiniana heritage and contemporary allure, breathing new life into traditional elements”

Starting her show was her feminine take on the classic barong. Piña tops with delicate embroideries were dotted with crystals for added flair. Present on the showcase as well were the butterfly sleeves in the form of boleros with dainty beading. The Philippines’ basket heritage was also alive during the show courtesy of the digitally printed rattan and solihiya skirts. One of the highlights of her collection was an airbrushed dress with custom rattan belt and hand beaded stockings styled with Swarovski crystal-adorned salakot.

“My pieces are more ready-to-wear. I really stick with the colors of the piña,” the designer told Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “I want it to be more natural.”

Apart from putting the spotlight on the unique textiles of the Philippines, the collection also echoed the style of Ascott Makati. According to her, the palette was inspired by the hotel’s logo. The launch of Happy’s latest collection was in collaboration with Ascott Makati. Through its “Art of Living” soirée, the hotel hopes to present its refreshed brand and how Filipino arts, culture, and heritage are alive in its halls. But unlike other hotels in the metro, Ascott Makati wants to welcome its guests with Filipino artistry in a more intimate manner.

“As part of the relaunch, we will craft activities that will promote the arts,” general manager Cecille Teodoro said. “It is not only promoting local talents, but it is also an appreciation of the Filipino craftsmanship, the beauty and creativity of the Filipinos.”

Happy Andrada’s latest collection will also be showcased at Artefino Festival happening at The Fifth at Rockwell, Makati City from Aug.24 to 27.
