Since she established her brand in 1977, Josie Natori has been championing Filipino fashion on the world stage. Each piece of her Natori brand features the craftsmanship of Filipino artisans. That mission continues until today as she unveils her newest collection. Through her spring-summer 2023 line, the Filipino fashion designer is bringing the spirit of the Philippines abroad through vibrant pieces, inviting everyone to discover the beauty of the country one garment at a time.
“We celebrated our 45th anniversary in 2022, but 2023 strikes a new chapter for Natori and I really want to go with our roots—and my roots are in the Philippines,” the designer said during an online preview of her collection.
The collection features many of Natori’s signature silhouettes—always elegant, relaxed, and full of colors. Among the pieces she showcased were resort pieces imbued with floral prints and embroideries. Kaftans, suit ensembles, and maxi dresses in rich chartreuse, red orange, pink, and blue. One of her favorite pieces is a silk dress with a butterfly print draped for easy dressing.
Her collection continued with neutrals. Apart from the usual linen choice for the season’s dressing, the designer also opted to feature the piña fabric, a handwoven textile made of pineapple fibers. Also present in her collection is the spirit of the distinct callado embroidery. The white and cream pieces are adorned with the local embroidery that is usually seen on barong tagalog.
Rounding up the collection were her pieces in black. Lace becomes romantic and contemporary, especially with her bustier-maxi skirt look. Josie also designed the perfect accessories to match the pieces of her spring-summer 2023 collection like gold-plated acacia wood hoops and bangles, Balli high wedge slides, and Chizu suede knotted platform heels.
To fully capture the beauty of the Philippines, Josie also released a catalog for the collection with images shot in Intramuros, Manila and Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte last November.
“I'm very proud of it because not only is the collection inspired by my roots, the culture of the Philippines, the spirit and the craftsmanship, but we also photographed it in the Philippines,” Josie said. “Without the Philippines, there wouldn't be a Natori. It’s really very part of the DNA of the brand.”
