ILOILO CITY – A solar-powered drip irrigation system project by Grade 8 students of the University of the Philippines High School in Iloilo (UPHSI) was among the 30 winners of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Regional Centre for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education STEM competition.
The Aquastra: Solar-Powered Drip Irrigation System built by Guillane Marie Agreda, Chara Louise Joven, and Francheska Marie Loreña seeks to address the perennial problem of drought.
They developed a working model of a solar-powered drip irrigation system. Monggo seeds planted in a box were irrigated by two solar panels running the system.
The project was part of the culminating activity of their subject on Fundamentals of Earth Science II-Meteorology and Climate Science taught by teacher Vicente Armones IV.
