Routes Online awards MCIA as Best Airport in Asia in Under 5M category

CEBU CITY – The Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) reaped another international award after it was named as the Best Airport in Asia 2022 for the Under 5M Passengers category during the annual Routes Awards in Chiang Mai, Thailand on Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Aviation networking firm Routes Online cited MCIA’s operators for its efforts in airline and destination marketing and supporting airline partners as well as addressing demand for air services.

“GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. (has) always taken a two-pronged approach to route development: Airline marketing to create supply and destination marketing to ensure the sustainability of its airline partners’ presence and address the demand for air services,” the award-giving body said.

This award came after the MCIA Terminal 2 was adjudged winner in the World Architecture Festival in the Completed Buildings-Transport category in 2019.

Aside from the MCIA, the Department of Tourism (DOT) also won in the Routes Awards 2023 for the Destination Category. DOT was cited for its initiatives in partnering with airports and airlines to “reinstate discontinued routes and secure new air services."

“It has done this through marketing efforts locally and globally, regional travel exchanges and business-to-business meetings, joint campaigns, international roadshows, and familiarization tours for agents and media,” Routes Online said.

Emerging as the biggest winner was Singapore’s Changi Airport, which was named overall winner in this year’s Routes Award.

Routes Awards noted that in 2022, the hub increased its traffic to 32.2 million passenger movements from just 3.1 million in 2021.

It has recovered 57 percent of its passenger traffic compared to 2019 and is currently ranked the seventh busiest international airport in the world.

The airport also welcomed 11 new passenger airlines in the last two years, Routes Awards added.
