Love is in the air, but love scammers are online- BI

Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Norman Tansingco warned Filipino women anew over internet love scams as everybody appears to be excited with Valentine's Day.

Tansingco said issued the warning as a number of local women continued to be victimized by the modus, playing on their desire to go to a foreign land, and for marriage.

In many cases, the fraudster would tell the victim that he would fly to the Philippines to meet her, but would claim later of being arrested by immigration officers at the airport for carrying large sums of money, or other imaginary offenses.

The scammer would then ask the victim to deposit cash to his account to secure his release.

Tansingco said the modus was revealed in March last year when a woman complained that her foreigner boyfriend was held up by immigration officers at the Davao International Airport for carrying large sum of money.

It turned out that there was such incident, saving the would-be victim from the scam.
