Padilla fully supports bill giving additional benefits to former Presidents

Senator Robinhood C. Padilla fully supports a bill giving additional benefits to former Presidents especially since their sacrifices for the nation continue.

‘’I am sure they have much to contribute to our nation, even after their terms ended,’’ Padilla said.

‘’If I may add to the proposed measure, I propose that former Presidents be automatically made presidential advisers, and it will be up to the sitting President to decide which area they can contribute,’’ he stressed.

‘’For example, in the case of former President Rodrigo Duterte, he can be made an adviser on law enforcement or on foreign relations,’’ he added.

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go and three other senators have filed a measure that proposes to grant additional benefits and privileges to former presidents of the Philippines as they continue significant contributions and vital role in society even after their respective terms.

Aside from Go, Senators Mark A. Villar, Francis ‘’Tol’’ Tolentino, and Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, filed Senate Bill (SB)1784, or the proposed “Former Presidents Benefits Act of 2023”, on January 26.

The bill notes that former presidents are expected to “perform post-presidential duties such as meeting with foreign and local dignitaries, and attending public events and other social engagements.”

For this reason, these duties often require them to employ the services of personal staff and maintain private offices, the bill stated.
