"The loss of Congress is the gain of the DSWD."
House Speaker Martin Romualdez had this to say Wednesday, Feb, 1 regarding Rex Gatchalian’s recent appointment as Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) secretary.
Romualdez, who represents Leyte’s 1st district in the House of Representatives, gave this statement during a chance interview on the sidelines on the chamber's celebration of World Hijab Day.
Gatchalian, who took his oath as DSWD secretary on Tuesday night, must vacate his seat as Valenzuela's 1st district congressman.
"We wish him the best of luck. We know that you're going to do a fantastic job. You've done so well in Valenzuela. We know your public service, your dedication, your diligence, your energy, you will translate to further success for the DSWD," Romualdez said of Gatchalian.
"And don't worry, we'll take care of your district while you're gone," the Speaker added.
"Mabuhay po ang DSWD (Long live the DSWD) with the assumption of the new secretary. We wish Secretary Rex Gatchalian, a good friend of mine, a classmate of mine in the 14th Congress, all the best," Romualdez added.
Asked about what will happen to Gatchalian's House seat, Romualdez said it will be declared vacant during plenary session "at the right time".
"Usually when a vacancy occurs...there will be a caretaker for the duration of his absence. We will decide that...usually I also consult the party from which he comes from," the Leyte solon said.
Gatchalian belongs to the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).
