Bal David steps down as UST head coach

Bal David has resigned from his post as University of Santo Tomas men’s basketball head coach, the school confirmed on Thursday night, Jan. 26. 

The 50-year-old mentor’s coaching stint came two months prior to UAAP Season 85, but the Growling Tigers would fell into a 1-13 record under his watch. 

David, a former Growling Tiger himself, was part of the team’s back-to-back title run in the 1990s. 

As per The Varsitarian, assistant coach Rodney Santos has expressed his continued commitment to the team as part of the coaching staff despite David’s departure. 

Meanwhile, the services of Pido Jarencio is reportedly being sought after by the team, sources told Manila Bulletin

The 58-year-old tactician was recently named as NorthPort’s team manager following Bonnie Tan’s appointment as interim head coach for the PBA Governors’ Cup.

Jarencio, also a former UST player, began his coaching career for his alma mater in 2006 until 2013 and led the team to six Final Four appearances. 

UST, which only managed to win its opening match against Adamson last season, will be seeking to snap a 13-game losing streak in Season 86.
