Three dead, 1,393 families affected in massive Lanao del Norte flood


ILIGAN CITY – Three people were confirmed dead due to floods spawned by intermittent rains caused by low pressure area in Lanao del Norte on Monday, Jan. 2.

Abeliza Cepe Manzano, head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO), confirmed the death of three residents, including an 8-year old girl named Lawrence Grace Rafols of Dalama, Baroy.

The two others were from Tubod town. The three reportedly crossed flood water despite warning.

A family of five in Baris were on their way home from Salvador town when the bridge they crossed suddenly collapsed. The flood eventually carried them away. Two of them, a child and the father, died crossing the flood, while the three others were confined at Kapatagan hospital.

Manzano confirmed that as of 11 a.m. on Tuesday (Jan. 3), there were about 1,393 families from the towns of Tubod, Baroy, Lala, Kapatagan, Salvador and Kolambugan that were affected by flood.

Landslides also occurred at national highway, national road in Tubod to Magsaysay in Muna-muna area on Monday night. Magsaysay LGU immediately responded to clear the area and is now passable.

PDRRMO was still waiting for reports on how many houses were partially/totally damaged and other costs caused by the flooding incident in the province.

The provincial government of Lanao del Norte, meanwhile, has acknowledged those who, in one way or the other, have helped in the rescue operations, including the 5th Mechanized Battalion, the Philippine Army's 2nd Mechanized Brigade and the Philippine National Police, among others.
