Army sergeant wounded, gunman killed in Laguna checkpoint shootout


LAGUNA -- An army sergeant was wounded following an attack of a gunman who was killed in the exchange of gunfire in the Commission on Election (Comelec) checkpoint on Wednesday morning in Sta. Maria, this province.

In a report reaching the Laguna Police Provincial Office (LPPO), the wounded soldier was identified as Army Staff Sergeant Joel Rellosa who was assigned at Parang ng Buho Army Detachment.

The suspect was identified as Rolando Villegas Lopez, a resident of Barangay Namunga in Mabitac, Laguna.

The shooting incident happened at around 8:05 in the morning when the suspect arrived at the checkpoint at JP Rizal provincial road in Barangay Cabauan and suddenly fired a shot at the authorities manning the checkpoint.

Sgt. Rellosa, who was at the checkpoint assisting the Sta. Maria Philippine National Police in preparation for next Monday’s election, was hit on the right leg. The army man retaliated with gun fire, killing the suspect on the spot.

Sgt. Rellosa was rushed to the Sta. Cruz Medical Hospital for treatment. The police were still investigating the incident.
