House Speaker Martin Romualdez has humbly asked Filipinos to pray for him and his fellow congressmen as the nation prepares to welcome the New Year.

"The opening of a New Year is an opportunity to start fresh, whether we set out goals for self-improvement, rekindle broken ties, embark on career advancement, or just enjoy the simple pleasures of life," Romualdez said in his New Year message on Friday, Dec. 30.

"The beginning of the year should serve as a reminder to enjoy life and make the most of what we have," noted the Leyte 1st district representative.

He then asked Filipinos to help guide the House members in 2023 through the power of prayer.

"As we usher in the New Year, I ask that you include in your prayers, the members of the House of Representatives so that we may be guided in steering the country toward the right direction," he said.

Romualdez said this "right direction" includes the "path to economic stability and a country where no one gets left behind".

"To realize the goal of poverty alleviation, food security, and sustainable development. Where Filipino workers will no longer leave the country out of necessity; rather, they will work overseas because their skills, talent, work ethics, creativity, and hospitality are renowned worldwide," the House leader continued.

At any rate, Romualdez reckoned that the House has "exceeded expectations" so far in the 19th Congress.

"In the short time that your Representatives have been in office, the House of the People has exceeded its expectations in terms of approving remedial legislation and passing the budget. I attribute this to the good working relationship among the members of both Houses of Congress (House and Senate), who are responsive to the needs of the times," he said.

Romualdez further vowed that they "will always strive to fulfill our duty to the best of our abilities".

"We will maintain the highest standards, adhere to the principles of law and justice, and protect the rights of all citizens. We will not falter in our commitment to serve the public for the greater good and we resolve to make the necessary sacrifices to help each other in these challenging times," he added.
