CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The National Telecommunications Commission in Northern Mindanao (NTC-10) urged telecommunication companies to invest more to prevent any system issues in the upcoming days in the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card registration.
Apart from investing on the security aspect to avoid any leakage in subscribers’ information, Teodoro Buenavista Jr., NTC-10 director, said telco companies must also focus on providing a better way of registration as it would definitely help their companies.
“I’m pretty sure that they are doing a lot of adjustments and readjustments because there are other telco companies that will welcome you if you cannot provide a better way of registration,” Buenavista said during his recent guest appearance in an online talk show here broadcast on Facebook.
The NTC regional director made the statement when asked about the plans of telco companies to avoid further system errors as people were only given 180 days to register their SIM cards.
If their SIM is not been registered after 180 days, it will be deactivated. However, people have a five-day grace period after 180 days to register their SIMs before it will be permanently deactivated.
During the first day of the SIM card registration on Dec. 27, many netizens said on social media that they were unable to access the registration link from Globe Telecom Inc., one of the biggest telecommunication companies in the country.
Globe, however, posted an advisory on Dec. 27 acknowledging dfficulties of subscribers in accessing the registration site and assured the public that they were optimizing their system to have a better registration.
After a few hours of waiting, the company’s SIM registration portal was immediately returned.
The NTC central office said on Thursday, Dec. 29 that they have already tallied over three million registered SIMs – 530,424 from DITO Telecommunity Corp.; 1,769,374 from Globe Telecom Inc.; and 1,019,207 from Smart Communications Inc.
