Almost 10,000 families displaced by flood in Northern Mindanao


CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Almost 10,000 families or 46,000 individuals have been affected by flood spawned by nonstop rain due to a shear line in the Northern Mindanao region, the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Region 10 (DSWD-10) said on Monday, Dec. 26.

The DSWD-10 said as of 12 a.m. Monday, 7,790 families or 37,097 individuals have been affected in the province of Misamis Oriental.

Gingoog City has the most number of affected individuals with 32,429; followed by the municipality of Medina with 3,012, and Talisayan town with 1,656.

In the province of Misamis Occidental, 1,905 families or 8,254 individuals from 35 barangays in the municipalities of Sinacaban, Clarin, Jimenez, Aloran, and Tudela and the cities of Ozamiz and Oroquieta have been affected.

Eighty-one families or 323 persons were displaced from two barangays in Iligan City and 62 families or 204 were affected in the cities of Malaybalay and Valencia in Bukidnon.

A family of five was affected in Mambajao, Camiguin. No family or individual was affected or evacuated here.

A total of 73 barangays from 14 cities and municipalities in five provinces in the region have been affected by flood.

The DSWD said 40,426 individuals are currently in evacuation centers. Others have returned home after the flood subsided.

The DSWD has been providing support to affected local government units and individuals.

Mayor Rolando Uy has been coordinating with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department and City Social Welfare and Development Office for relief goods to affected areas.
