QC gov’t inaugurates rehabilitated shelter for victims of gender-based abuse


Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte led on Saturday, Dec. 17, the inauguration of the newly rehabilitated “Bahay Kanlungan” which serves as a temporary shelter for women, children and members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual (LGBTQIA+) commuity who were victims of gender-based violence and abuse.

The city government said that the renovated three-storey protection center in the city has two dormitories with 20 beds, an activity area, dining area and a conference room. Bahay Kanlungan was first opened in November 2020. 

It added that the center is a one stop shop that provides medical and legal assistance, and counseling to the victims.

Present at the ceremony were Councilors Marra Suntay, Ellie Juan, Raquel Malangen, Nanette Daza, District 4 Action Officer Al Flores, and Gender and Development Head and Protection Center Officer-in-charge Janete Oviedo.

“Walang lugar ang karahasan sa lungsod Quezon, kaya naman para sa mga nais magreport ng kaso ukol dito, maaring idulog sa Quezon City Protection Center ( There is no place for harassment in Quezon City, so for those who want to report a case about this, they can go to the Quezon City Protection Center)," the city government said.
