Five more local government units (LGUs) in Central Mindanao have signed up for the housing program being initiated by the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD).
DHSUD Undersecretary Samuel Young said the agreement they signed with the LGUs will pave the way for the construction of low-cost housing for informal settler families and those under low-income bracket in General Santos City, Koronadal City and Polomolok in South Cotabato, Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat and Province of South Cotabato.
“We brought even better program concept to help informal settler families including indigenous people in Region 12,” said Young.
Based on the agreement, the LGUs will provide land as equity, identify the beneficiaries and undertake project, which will be enrolled in the Pambansang Pabahay.
The plans are for condo-type housing projects that will be built in Barangay San Jose in Koronadal City, Barangay Cannery Site in Polomolok, Barangay San Pablo in Tacurong City, and Barangay Mabuhay in General Santos City.
Based on the DHSUD data, there are 48,253 informal settler families as of July 2022 in Region 12, which consists of four provinces.
The DHSUD and its key shelter agencies are tasked to build 1 million houses annually in the next six years to address the country’s housing backlog pegged at more than 6.5 million units.
A total of 40 agreements have already been signed with various LGUs nationwide.
