Eight people died in a flash flood in Tanay, Rizal due to heavy rains spawned by the shear line.
Tanay Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office head Norberto Matienzo Jr. said the victims, seven of whom were senior citizens and a five-year-old child, were on their way home aboard a jeepney when raging floodwaters forced their vehicle to turn on its side around 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, in Sta. Ines, Tanay, Rizal.
Matienzo said the body of one of the victims was found in the river near Barangay Tinucan in Tanay while the rest of the bodies were found still inside the jeepney with head injuries.
The Tanay Municipal Police identified the victims as Teresita Quinto, Maylard Keith Fernandez, Leonida Doroteo, Salvacion Delgado, Carmen Dela Cruz, Esmena Doroteo, Avelino Buera, and Deodora Buera.
The office of Tanay Mayor Rafael Tanjuatco has sent a team of social workers to the upland village of Sta. Ines to assist the families of the eight fatalities.
The victims reportedly came from a branch of Land Bank of the Philippines at the town proper to claim their financial assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Joicee Gapido of the office of the mayor said the last trip of the passenger jeepney going to Sta. Ines was supposed to be at around 4 p.m. but it was learned that the victims requested that the departure of the jeep from the terminal be delayed in order to accommodate them as there was a long queue of beneficiaries of the DSWD assistance at the ATM.
Initial report said the jeep had almost reached the end of the last river when the strong current swept it, causing it to fall on its side.
