1,000 classrooms in Central Visayas have yet to be completely repaired 1 year after ‘Odette’

CEBU CITY – About 1,000 classrooms in Central Visayas have yet to be completely repaired, almost a year after the onslaught of typhoon ‘’Odette.’’

Salustiano Jimenez, director of the Department of Education- Central Visayas (DepEd-7), said 1,000 classrooms are still undergoing repairs after they were damaged by Odette on Dec. 16.

Jimenez said more than 5,000 classrooms were destroyed because of the typhoon.

He thanked local government units and non-government organizations for assisting DepEd-7 in repairing the damaged classrooms.

"This is aside from the help from the Central Office with Secretary Sara (Duterte) always on the go and always following up for updates on the repairs," Jimenez said.

Repairs only started in June or almost six months after the typhoon struck because of some interruptions such as the election campaign and the election itself, Jimenez said.

Jimenez credited school administrators for managing the lack of classrooms. "The schools were able to manage. Despite the damaged classrooms, we were still able to implement face-to-face classes," Jimenez said.
