Meralco subsidiary bags solar rooftop deal

Spectrum, the solar solutions subsidiary of power utility giant Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has been tapped to install the 2.0-megawatt peak (MWp) solar rooftop facility for Anglo Watsons Glass, Inc., a glass manufacturing facility sited at the Silangan Industrial Park in Calamba, Laguna.

Anglo Watsons, a unit of Emperador Inc., is into manufacturing of flint glass bottles for the brandy empire of billionaire Andrew Tan. It supports the company liquor product line that includes Emperador Light, Andy Player Whisky, Zabana Rum, and The Bar.

According to Spectrum, the solar rooftop installation will be deployed within the six-hectare facility of the glass manufacturing firm – and that is targeted for completion by February next year.

“The rooftop solar project will allow Anglo Watsons to generate approximately 2.5 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy per year,” the Meralco subsidiary-company noted.

Anglo Watsons President Alec Tempongko said the company’s shift to renewable energy is in line with “move towards more sustainable business operations” – which is also the pathway being tracked by their parent-firm Alliance Global Group, Inc.

The glass firm conveyed it has been producing roughly 150 million bottles per year at its Laguna plant or up to 11 million cases of bottles annually.

Via its energy usage shift as underpinned by Spectrum’s offered solution, Anglo Watsons calculated that it would be able to pare its carbon emissions by 1,929 metric tons – and that will have an equivalent of 200,000 trees planted or around 7.2 million kilometers of reduced vehicle travel on a yearly basis.

The quality seal guaranteed by Spectrum Chief Operating Officer Patrick Henry T. Panlilio will be for Anglo Watsons getting “assured of good quality and reliable service for its planned solar project.”

He added their company will be “delivering a solution specifically designed to help the company realize its financial and sustainability goals,” adding that “this is just the beginning of our partnership, and Spectrum will be with Anglo Watsons throughout its sustainability journey.”

Many corporates are embracing "transformative steps" when it comes to energy usage in their businesses, not just to cut down their electric bills but also to ensure their environmental social governance (ESG) compliance and as anchor to their mid-century net zero goals.

By far, solar rooftop installations had been among the solutions already proven to have viable outcomes, hence, it is now a thriving option not just for commercial and industrial (C&I) entities but even for residential end-users.
