Actor-singer James Reid recently explained the success behind love teams as a concept in Philippine showbiz.
In a guest appearance on the weekly podcast hosted by Dumbfoundead, "Fun With Dumb," James shared his own journey becoming an actor-singer.
According to him, at first, he kind of really didn't want to be part of show business.
But then he started enjoying it, particularly doing music.
However, instead of pursuing that path in earnest, James claimed he was "pushed" into doing acting.
"I think TV actors are like the biggest thing in the Philippines more than movies; more than artists, singers," he related.
As actor, James was paired with Nadine Lustre.
"So in the Philippines, there's this thing called 'love team' where they get two actors and they put them together, and if the audience likes the chemistry every project you do after that it's always with that same person," he shared.
Surprised, Rick Lee commented that it was like an "arranged show business marriage."
American rapper Dumbfoundead, meanwhile, simply likened it to actors Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan being paired in films in the '90s.
James said: "It's an interesting way to put it. Yeah, but like Brangelina (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie), and they even do that with the names."
The 29-year-old star then noted how he made six movies and three TV shows with the same love team partner for years.
Rick then asked: "How do you stop it?"
James answered: "You can't."
He reiterated: "Once they ship you and there are fans behind, it's unstoppable. There's nothing you can do about it."
