Coralie Charriol on designing her new collection and empowering women

The Swiss luxury brand celebrates its 40th anniversary with the release of the Saint-Tropez Mariner jewelry collection

“Inspiration is everywhere” is an idea one usually hears from creatives. People just need to keep their eyes peeled to spot it. But for others, inspiration can come on a grand scale, from ancient statues and buildings down to the very location they are established in. For years, fashion designers and other industry creatives have been greatly influenced by the places they see. Not only do these places give many visual cues for them to interpret through their design but they also give them a sense of the person they are dressing.

That is true in the case of Charriol. For its latest release, the Swiss luxury brand reimagines its past creation inspired by France’s seaside village. Dubbed “Saint-Tropez Mariner,” the label’s newest line brings together its signature design elements matched with the sleek and glamorous style of the women on a holiday in Southern France.

Maritime heritage meets the distinctive cable design

Since its inception in 1983, Charriol is known for its iconic cable motif. This time, its signature is matched with marine-inspired elements echoing the charm of Saint Tropez, which was first mirrored by the brand’s beloved timepiece.

“I love a redesign… the process was especially illuminating because it really shook loose the essence of the Saint-Tropez collection…reimagining the chain was just the beginning,” Coralie Charriol, the brand’s CEO and creative director, says. “Within the context of its maritime heritage, we were able to play around with so many shapes and materials, each more exciting and pleasing than the last.”

Organized into three lines, the new St-Tropez Mariner jewelry collection presents bangles and bracelets, rings and earrings, and necklaces long and short—all designed to be mixed and matched. It showcases design elements such as the U-shaped anchor seen in Saint-Tropez and the nautical aperture found on ships mixed with the brand's C logo, padlock charm, and, of course, its twisted cable.

“For me, it’s a collection that transports you straight to Saint Tropez, evoking the views, sounds, and excitement of this singular place,” Coralie muses.

Saint-Tropez in Manila

It was in 2019, the year before the pandemic struck the world, that Coralie last visited the Philippines. After two years, she makes her way back to the archipelago, not only to bring her new collection but also to celebrate the four-decade legacy of the brand, which started with her father Philippe Charriol.

Last Nov. 3, Manila’s most stylish crowd gathered together to toast the brand’s legacy in the luxurious Chairman’s Lounge in Okada Manila. Think of France’s Dîner en Blanc because that’s what happened during Coralie’s party in the capital where attendees were all dressed in chic white and beige. Joining her at the event were SSI Group Inc.’s president Anton Huang and the brand’s Filipino ambassador, actress Iza Calzado.

“For me, this is time to have fun and to enjoy life again. Charriol is about that—to find happiness and joy,” Coralie says. “Charriol also loves giving beauty, making you feel good about yourself. It is about feeling sexy in what you wear no matter what body you are working in. Jewelry and watches always fit. That's what I love about them.”

Empowering women beyond jewelry

During the event, Iza announced that the brand is funding the very first mental health workshop of She Talks Asia, a movement that celebrates the modern woman.

Staying true to the promise, Coralie makes an appearance at the workshop dubbed “Kinaiya,” which was held at the Mano Amiga Academy in Parañaque City last Nov. 4. Attended by mothers, female guardians, and Mano Amiga scholars, the event aims to break the stigma of mental health by helping women learn and understand mental health, helping them manage their everyday struggles.

“Charriol is really about being different, unique, and original,” Coralie says. “My slogan is called ‘live different’... It is about being unique and standing out and having the courage to be yourself. For me, it is important to be brave and not be perfect.”
