‘Paeng’ leaves 10,257 people displaced, 14 major roads closed in Cordillera


BAGUIO CITY – About 10,257 individuals belonging to 2,400 families from 46 barangays in 15 towns of five provinces in the Cordillera region were affected by Typhoon Paeng, an initial report by the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Cordillera revealed.

The DSWD-Cordillera said Abra, which has yet to recover from the shock of a recent 6.4 magnitude earthquake, saw four of its towns, namely, Bangued, Licuan-Baay, Malibcong and Tineg, suffer from the wrath of Paeng, with 25 of their barangays greatly affected.

Typhoon Paeng also wrought havoc on barangay Conner in Apayao; Tinoc in Ifugao; seven barangays in the towns of Pasil, Tabuk City, Pinukpuk, Balbalan in Kalinga; and ten barangays in the towns of Besao, Sadanga, Tadian, Paracelis and Natonin in Mt Province.

A total of 24 individuals from eight families were evacuated from their homes in Purok 2, Barangay San Juan, Tabuk City, Kalinga, due to flooding.

Three houses were declared totally damaged and nine were partially damaged, while no one was reported dead or injured in the typhoon, but one person was reported missing in the town of Balbalan, Kalinga.

DSWD-Cordillera distributed 257 family food packs to the affected.

In its advisory on Saturday, Oct. 29, the DSWD said that 14 main roads in different parts of the region have been closed due to landslides.

Kennon Road had been opened to traffic after it was cleared of debris, but only the Baguio City-bound vehicles are allowed to pass.

The major highways to Baguio City, the Marcos Higway, Nagullian Road and Asin-Nangalisan-San Pascual-La Union road remained open to any vehicle.

The Apayao-Ilocos Norte and Claveria-Calanasan-Kabugao roads remained closed to traffic due to landslides and road damage.

Gov. Dangwa National Road, Cong. Andres Acop road and Benguet-Nueva Vizcaya Road are still closed in the province of Benguet.

The Kiangan-Tinoc-Buguias road, the Banaue-Hungduan-Benguet Boundary road and Banaue-Mayoyao-Alfonso Lista-Isabela Boundary are closed in the province of Ifugao.

Lubuagan-Batong Buhay-Abra Road, Mt. Province-Calanan-Pinukpuk-Abbut road, Balbalan –Pinukpuk road and Kalinga-Abra road are also closed to traffic in the province of Kalinga.

Baguio-Bontoc road, Mt.Province-Cagayan via Tabuk-Enrile Road are also closed to traffic.
