Severe tropical storm Paeng (international name: Nalgae) has crossed the Bondoc Peninsula in Southern Quezon, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Saturday, Oct. 29.
Updates from the state weather bureau showed that Paeng made its third landfall over Buenavista, Quezon at 6 a.m. Recent landfalls were recorded in Virac, Catanduanes (1:10 a.m.) and Caramoan, Camarines Sur (1:40 a.m.)
“On the forecast track, the center of Paeng will pass close or make landfall in the vicinity of Marinduque this morning before traversing the CALABARZON-Metro Manila-Bataan Peninsula area for the remainder of the day,” said PAGASA.
Packing maximum winds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustines of up to 160 kph, the center of Paeng was last located over the coastal waters of Catanauan, Quezon.
'Paeng' to cause heavy to torrential rains in Metro Manila, nearby areas
Although a “southward shift” in its track is not ruled out, PAGASA said Paeng may traverse the CALABARZON-Metro Manila area. With this development, residents were warned against heavy to torrential rains that may persist until Saturday evening.
“Through this morning, eavy to intense with at times torrential rains over Bicol Region, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, Guimaras, Quezon including Polillo Islands, Marinduque, Romblon, Mindoro Provinces, and the northern portion of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands,” said PAGASA.
“This morning through evening, eavy to intense with at times torrential rains over Metro Manila, CALABARZON, Marinduque, Romblon, Mindoro Provinces, and the northern portion of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands,” it furthered.
Paeng, according to the state weather bureau, may weaken into a tropical storm within 24 hours due to its interaction with the Luzon landmass.
Wind Signals
As Paeng threatens Luzon, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals remain hoisted in several areas of the country.
Currently, the highest wind signal raised is Signal No. 3. Areas under this wind alarm include Camarines Norte, the western portion of Camarines Sur, Marinduque, Quezon including Polillo Islands, Laguna, Batangas, Cavite, Metro Manila, and Rizal.
Signal No. 2 was hoisted over Catanduanes, Albay, the western portion of Sorsogon, the western portion of Masbate including Burias Island, the southern portion of Aurora, Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan, Tarlac, Zambales, Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, the rest of Camarines Sur, Romblon, Oriental Mindoro, and Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Islands.
Meanwhile, areas under Wind Signal No. 1 include Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Benguet, Ilocos Sur, La Union, the rest of Aurora, the rest of Sorsogon, the rest of Masbate including Ticao Island, and the northern portion of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Cebu including Bantayan and Camotes Islands, Bohol, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Guimaras, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo.
